Hello, Information on the lunar eclipse next week for our Troop is as follows: The University of MD Observatory will have an open house Monday night/Tuesday morning to include a talk at 8:00 by Dr. Elizabeth Warner, a staff member of the UMD Department of Astronomy Monday night, followed by observing the eclipse early Tue. morning. We are expected. Plan is to leave the Church Mon. pm 7:00 to drive to the observatory. Arrive at the Church 6:45 pm. Class A. My recommendation/preference is to drive as a group because the observatory is difficult to find. See http://astro.umd.edu. Please do the following: 1. Notify me of your participation and that of your Scout(s)/siblings and provide a cell phone for last minute developments, to include cancellation due to overcast skys. You may wish to transport individuals home Monday night after the 8:00 lecture and miss the eclipse. Note that the lecture and a short viewing session is worth attending in and of itself. 2. Familiarize yourself with the event's web site for directions and schedule. Plan on ~ 1:00 - 4:00 am Tue 2/21/10 to view the eclipse, which includes totally at 3:17. 3. Make plans if you desire for an HCPSS excused absence for your Scout for Wed. if you so desire. 4. Learn the basics of the circumstances under which a lunar eclipse happens [discussed briefly Thursday evening at the Troop meeting.] CLEAR SKYS! Mr. Bernstein |
